Panchayat Diwas Celebration

On 23rd April 2008 16th anniversary of the 73rd & 74th Constitutional Amendments was celebrated at Mirzapur. The main event was organized in the Zilla Panchayat Sabhagar of Mirzapur. In total 92 elected representatives of PRIs, District Panchayati Raj Officer, representatives of different CSOs from Mirzapur district, and media persons were present in the celebration. A Joint audit of the status of Panchayati Raj system in Mirzapur district was done and future strategies to fill the gaps were worked out during the workshop. It was opined by almost all the speakers that even after 15 years of this new arrangement many things have not happened the way it should have been. Aspired support from the local government officials to the newly elected representatives of PRIs have found to be missing many a times. As a result the new entrants (especially women and people from the weaker section) have to face tough situations while trying to function. Here the role of a CSO has been visualized as extremely important. The CSOs can and shall try to help build the understanding through disseminating timely and trust worthy informations to the elected representatives. This will help the ERs in their smooth functioning.
