Community Health and Girl Child Education Program

Women today are considered as a weaker sex. They have been given subordinate status in society. A considerable amount of abuse and harassment of women also take place within the family. Experiences say education empowers women, increases women’s status in the community and leads to greater input into family and community decision making. Perhaps more importantly, education provides girls with basic knowledge of their rights as individuals and citizens. Having knowledge and decision making power can place women on a more equal footing.  Education also provides people with knowledge and skills especially in the areas of health and nutrition. Education is of value not only for person who acquires it, but also for others. The benefits of women education are compounded across generations. Moreover widespread female education also helps in checking population growth.

A positive correlation has been observed between education and health particularly with regard to girl child education and maternal as well as reproductive health. Experiences from other regions have revealed that female education leads to many social benefits, including improvements in standards of hygiene, reduction in infant and child mortality rates and decline in population growth.

This rationale in background Sahbhagi Shikshan Kendra is taking up initiative in 5 gram panchayats of Cholapur block of Varanasi district towards bringing up qualitative changes in community health particularly maternal health with due focus on adolescent health and girl child education. The key features of intervention are-

  • Organizing Kishori Samuh

  • Encouraging girl child education

  • Establishing community level information centers

  • Orientation and Sensitization towards Adolescent health and Maternal Health

  • Organizing health fairs and Sammelans

  • Establishing linkages between PRIs and Health

  • Encouraging village level health planning
