Community Resilience to Flood Risks in Kaisarganj
Block, U.P., India.
Bahraich
District of Uttar Pradesh, situated below the
boarder of Nepal, is a high flood hazard zone.
The districts get flooded when there is high
rain in the upstream of rivers in Nepal, and
especially when there is overflow discharge
from the barrages in the Indo-Nepal boarder.
Bahraich District and especially Kaisarganj
Block were submerged by flooding from the Ghaghra
river from end of July to September 2007.

Yamuna Action Plan II
YAP II is one of the important projects, being
implemented by U.P Jal Nigam through its Project
offices at Ghaziabad and Agra. It is being implemented
in 3 States of the country (Haryana, Delhi and
Uttar Pradesh) and within UP, 8 towns viz Agra,
Mathura Vrindavana, Etawah (all under Agra region)
Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Noida, Ghaziabad
(under Ghaziabad region) have been selected
where river Yamuna passes through.

Women today are considered
as a weaker sex. They have been given subordinate
status in society. A considerable amount of
abuse and harassment of women also take place
within the family. Experiences say education
empowers women, increases women’s status
in the community and leads to greater input
into family and community decision making.

Vidya
Gyan Scholarship Scheme
This challenge has been bravely taken
up by Rajiv Gandhi foundation with generous financial
support from the Shri Sivasubramaniya Nadar Educational
and Charitable Trust in form of a scholarship programme
- The VidyaGyan Scholarships. The programme will cover
3 districts of Rae Bareily, Varanasi and Barabanki
Uttar Pradesh. Around 1500 scholarships will be awarded
to girls studying in class 6 and class 9.This will
check the number of dropouts among girls belonging
to muslim and dalit families which are the most marginalized
and vulnerable sections of the society. The girls’
selection for availing the benefits is primarily on
merit.
