Migration Information
Centre Program in Mirzapur (Supported by UNDP)
| There are over
200 million migrants in India (NSS). An analysis of the
Census 2001 data indicates that during 1991-2001, about
61 per cent migrants moved within the districts, 24 per
cent within the states and 13 per cent inter-state. Migration
is seen as an independent individual risk factor for HIV
in a wide range of settings. Migrants may face exploitation,
harassment (including sexual), poverty, low status, disempowerment,
segregation, isolation, job insecurity, stress (mental and
physical), gender imbalances, increased alcohol consumption
and discrimination. Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh is
badly hit by the problems of migration. Hundreds of people
migrate every year to different places in search of livelihood
and provide better living to their family. But, they themselves
become vulnerable to different situation and diseases like
HIV/AIDS. |

their migrating place, reason for migration, problems that they
face at the destination centres, their family condition and
their knowledge and skill etc.

plays the key role in terms of regular discussion, suggestions
and perusing the effort for safe migration in the future.
Organising Awareness Campaigns and sensitization workshops-
In the part of information dissemination towards capacity building
of migrants and their family we organise information camps, information
kiosk, and orientation on HIV& AIDS.
