Mirzapur
In Mirzapur district, interventions
are carried out at both, the urban and rural levels. SSK has taken
up interventions in 10 Gram Panchayats and the Mirzapur Municipality.
Empowering Mirzapur Municipality
SSK supported 80 Panchayats in the 8 blocks of Mirzapur
district during the pre-election phase to the Vidhan Sabha (Municipality).
The targets were the women voters. To increase their participation
to exercise their franchise, a campaign was organised which focused
on the importance of voting and also how to vote.
Empowering Panchayati Raj
Under the aegis of governance where people matter
(GWPM) sponsored by PRIA, New Delhi, activities were organised
for the Gram Sabhas and elected representatives.
- Meetings
at the GS were organised every month where information about
Job card, Demand of work, Unemployment Allowances, Minimum Wages,
Role of Gram Sabha, participation of women, the role of the
six sub committees, etc were provided.
- Information
on NREGA and RTI was also provided in detail along with which
local facilitators were also identified sanctified. The elected
representatives were also provided training on NREGA and application
of RTI.
- Trainings,
workshops, distribution of posters, pamphlets and wall writing
were organised on RTI and women were motivated to take advantages
of NREGA by providing them the entire information in detail
after Organising several meetings On 21st August,
2006, 600 people (400 men and 200 women) gheraod the city Block
office with the result that some obtained job cards immediately
and the authorities promised to issue job cards to the other
through camps organised in each village.
- Two
PICs were established in two GPs. This has greatly enhanced
the community's access to information and knowledge.
Empowerment of Citizen Leaders (CLs)
The program, supported by CIDA envisaged the selection
of Citizen Leaders to act as facilitators in the 10 GPs and sustain
the interventions.

Profiles
of the citizen leaders were developed (two in each G.P., total
40).

The
CLs organised Gram Sabha meetings where information about NREGA
and RTI were explained in detail.

Joint
meetings with the CLs and other CBOs formed were organised
to identify the areas where the CLs could solicit the assistance
of the CSOs.
Empowerment of Mirzapur Municipality
- A
number of meetings by women at the ward level were organised
in which they were provided information on DSSMT and IHSPP Schemes,
as well the type of persons they should vote for.
- Meetings
were organised for CBOs regarding their role in the forthcoming
elections.
- A
Rath (Chariot) was developed for information dissemination along
with sensitization of the media and other actors of Civil Society.
A Video Recording was carried out and the use of Cable TV was
made for dissemination of information.
- The
newly elected representatives were also felicitated at a separate
function organised.
In two wards, the prospective
candidates related their agenda if elected. This event gave the
opportunity to the voters to know more about the prospective candidate
and also raise queries.
A few regional networks
have come up in the Vindhya region. These networks are being strengthened
through meetings, information, trainings, etc, to play an active
role in development. Even the CBOs are undergoing training so
that they along with CLs can work for the development of the area.
A large
number of people participated in a program organised for “Exchange
of Information” in which media; academia and government
officials also participated. Topics on Sewage, Toilets, Ration
card, Mid-Day meal, NREGA nd RTI were extensively discussed. A
large number of queries were raised which were satisfactory answered. |
