‘Vidya
Gyan Scholarship Scheme’
Instituted
by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation
To ensure quality education to girls from
Dalit and Muslim families even after primary school level is a
great challenge today. This challenge has been bravely taken up
by Rajiv Gandhi foundation with generous financial
support from the Shri Sivasubramaniya Nadar Educational and
Charitable Trust in form of a scholarship programme - The
VidyaGyan Scholarships. The programme will cover 3
districts of Rae Bareily, Varanasi and Barabanki Uttar Pradesh.
Around 1500 scholarships will be awarded to girls studying in
class 6 and class 9.This will check the number of dropouts among
girls belonging to muslim and dalit families which are the most
marginalized and vulnerable sections of the society. The girls’
selection for availing the benefits is primarily on merit.
Sahbhagi
Shikshan Kenra has taken up the job for proper implementation
of Vidyagyan scholarship programme in Cholapur block in
Varanasi distt. At a time when the girls and women are
at the most disadvantaged position socially, economically and
culturally, it is going to be an arduous task for Ssk to motivate
the community to support the cause for providing quality education
to girls. Ssk has not only ensured that the scholarship amount
is used for purchasing schoolbooks, school dress and meeting out
tuition expenses for the girls but has also started coaching centers
by recruiting teachers who will help out the girls in subjects
like maths and English. In time these teachers will be responsible
for mobilizing community by calling regular MTA/PTA meetings and
linking the local governance with the programme by making the
VEC functional.

The programme has shown a scientific
and progressive temperament by including computer education
in its support area. With the society becoming more and more techno
savvy, it has been emphasized that the selected girls in class
IXth should be made computer literate so that they could boldly
face the challenge given by their counterpart studying in towns.
For this an additional amount of Rs. 250 will be provided to the
girls for getting computer education. Ssk is also thinking seriously
on its contribution towards providing computer education.
Though the programme is in its nascent
stage as it has been launched on 3rd Nov. 2007 but
it is for sure that within a short span of time it will become
a ray of hope for the girls who have lost their hope to carry
on their studies further.
