International
Women’s Day Celebration
International Women’s
Day on 8th March provides an opportunity to celebrate
strength
of womanhood. The day also provides a chance to mainstream women
socially as well as politically and built an enabling environment
were women rights are respected as well as exercised.
This day provides a platform to
women to give voice to their thoughts and show their protest towards
discrimination and violence inflicted on them. The occasion proves
to place where women can show their collective strength and can
demand for equal status in society.
Acknowledging
the importance of occasion women’s day celebrations were
organised by SSK in Sitapur and Varanasi on 8th March. The objective
of the celebrations was to enable women to realise their rights
and entitlements as well recognize the importance of collective
strength. The thematic focus for celebrations in both the places
were based upon local issues particularly NREGA and girl child
education.
Highlights from Varanasi
“International Women’s day”
was celebrated on 8th march 2008 in cholapur block of Varanasi
district. The program included issue based short plays, speeches
and folk songs. Around 700 women and adolescent girls and men
participated in the celebration.
The prime objective of the program was-:

To create awareness on the importance of international Women’s
Day.

To create awareness on the importance of Girl Child Education.
-
Provide a platform to girls to showcase their talent.
-
Sensitize the community on issues pertaining to women.
Ms Shalini from SSK welcomed all the invites and participants.
Mr Ashok gave a brief introduction about the background and objective
of the SSK.
Ms Durgawati District Coordinator of Sarv Shikasha Abhiyaan was
the chief guest of the programme. Mrs Chamela Devi and Mrs Shanti
Gram pradhan of Cholapur and Dharsona shared the dais with the
chief guest. Mr Pramod, District Training Coordinator and principal
of Rajkiya kanya vidyalaye were also present till the end of the
program.
Mrs Durgawati chief guest of the program talked about the relevance
of observing 8 March as women’s day and importance of girl
child education. During celebrations she motivated participants
to provide the educational opportunities to their daughter .She
also congratulated participants on the occasion of
Women’s Day.
Ms Chamela Devi Pradhan of Cholapur promised to provide support
to women at each level.

Girls from different schools of Cholapur block performed various
cultural program. They also performed plays on social issues
like Dowry, Domestic Violence and Girl child Education in a very
effective manner. In the end of the program women vowed a pledge
of solidarity.
Vote of Thanks was extended by Mr Sudhir Singh by appreciating
the presence and participation of every body.
Highlights from Sitapur
On
the occasion of international women’s day, hundreds of women
from remote villages of Sitapur had gathered at the block office
to celebrate 8 march, 2008 as their day. Zila panchayat adhyakash,
media people, academicians as well as president of the all India
women’s congress- sitapur participated in the event and
shared their views. Apart from theme based short plays
on various social issues like – female foeticide, NREGA
related challenges etc, the event had active participation of
the women in various forms. These women spoke not only about
their hardships and challenges but also made an attempt to find
solutions to some of the problems pertaining to their daily life.
Through various means like – song, drama etc, the problems
of the women was highlighted in the event. The event was
special in itself as it not only gave the women the space to talk
about their problems, but it also served as a platform where they
enjoyed some light moments as well.
