Mainstreaming the indigenous knowledge and practices for flood resilience

The project aims to enhance resilience in flood-prone communities of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by integrating indigenous knowledge into disaster risk reduction plans. It emphasizes sustainable, community-driven strategies for preparedness, recovery, and long-term resilience through capacity building and stakeholder collaboration.


The project need:

The eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh and districts of Bihar, particularly those situated in the Terai

region along the Nepal border, face some of the most devastating floods almost every year. This

relentless vulnerability is intricately tied to the region’s geographical composition. Despite its

picturesque landscape adorned with numerous rivers and rivulets, make the area prone to recurrent

flooding, wreaking havoc across the state. Over the years, these recurrent floods have trapped the local communities in cycles of poverty and backwardness, compounding numerous socio-economic

challenges. However, amidst this adversity, the community has able to develop adaptive strategies to reduce their risk and mitigate the impact of floods. Through generations of experience and traditional knowledge, they have devised some methods to cope with the flood situation to some extent. For centuries, these resilient communities have continued to refine and implement techniques that enable them to survive and navigate the annual onslaught of the calamities.


The project:

The project delve to enhance the resilience of flood-prone communities in districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This initiative focuses on empowering the flood affected communities by incorporating

indigenous knowledge and strategies in their Disaster risk reduction plan.

By leveraging local expertise and traditional practices, the program seeks to foster a sense of ownership and sustainability within these communities, enabling them to better withstand and recover from the impacts of floods. Moreover, beyond immediate relief efforts, the program emphasizes the importance of long-term resilience-building measures, fostering partnerships and collaboration among stakeholders to create lasting positive change. Through a holistic approach that integrates community engagement, capacity building, and knowledge exchange, the project strives to ensure that vulnerable communities are equipped to face future challenges with resilience and determination.


Objective:

  • To improve resilience of the vulnerable communities through sharing of indigenous knowledge

    and coping strategies.

  • To Improve policy and institutional arrangements to plan and deliver flood resilient

    development approaches at local level (Institutional strengthening)

  • To build capacities of CSOs, community organizations and partners to effectively respond to

    disasters and implement socially inclusive and innovative community-based adaptation and

    mitigation strategies.

  • To enhance sharing, learning and reflection on practical experience and good models of

    mitigation and adaptation for integration at local and regional level.


Project Location:

10 districts of two state Uttar Pradesh & Bihar

Bahraich, Balrampur, Sitapur, Kushinagar, Siddharthnagar, Gorakhpur, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Saharsa &

Supaul.
